A sense of relief converts to a sense of optimism

Going into this year’s half-yearly Australian equity reporting season, Donald Williams, Chief Investment Officer of Platypus Asset Management, says a lot of investors were worried the market would roll into a new cycle of earnings downgrades.

What unfolded was a series of pretty reasonable results for most, despite the many potholes that still remain across the Australian economy.

  • market surprises – some pleasant, including CBA, Seek and Super Retail; others not so, like former market darlings such as SAI Global and Wotif
  • the stabilisation of earnings and margins in the Retail sector, and
